The tower business unit of RCom aims to launch an exchange platform for sharing infrastructure. The exchange, to be set up by Reliance Telecom Infrastructure, would help operators, tower owners and people who want to rent out space for towers to transact business and book tower space online.
Indian telecoms operators are looking to share infrastructure such as mobile phone towers to keep costs down amid intense price competition and surge in low-income subscribers.
Reports further said the exchange would rope in rival tower businesses being set up by companies like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone’s India joint-venture partner Essar Group and CDMA operator Tata Teleservices. Reliance Communications recently sold 5% of the equity in Reliance Telecom Infrastructure Ltd to Private Equity funds.
