The DoT is in a fix on use of mixed technologies [GSM & CDMA] by private operators on PAN India basis. Reliance which already has a PAN India footprint in CDMA wants to provide GSM services as well. Reliance GSM and CDMA services both operate under separate cost centers and are competing against each other.
The GSM spectrum is one of the most sought after resource. For instance, in Karantaka the high growth cellular circle, operator like Airtel is already packing more than 4 lakh users / MHz of spectrum against the DoT standard of 1.7 Lakh / MHz.
DoT wants directives from TRAI on Reliance GSM issue.
