5 Million Mobile subscribers in India have registered with the National Do Not Call Registry within the first 5 days. Also 14,000 of the estimated 25,000 telemarketing companies have registered.
TRAI Chairman Nripendra Misra said,
The fact that over 50 lakh subscribers have registered within five days is proof that there is a widespread feeling, especially among urban users, that telemarketers were encroaching on the private space of cellphone users. I have personally checked the websites of all operators. Now, they all seem ready. Consumers can also register their numbers directly on site. Even the option of registering via SMS seems to be in place, we did a few tests today.
In a separate development, Vodafone-Hutch-Essar is the first Telecom Service Provider in India to introduce Call Filtering / Blocking Facility to keep unwanted calls away. This comes with a charge but is definitely worth it.
